It’s the 1st of March – the daffodils are out and it is still cold enough to stay inside with a good book.
Today is St David’s Day and World Book Day, so to combine them into a harmonious whole, here are some of my favourite Welsh writers:
- Taliesin (He started it all – more myth than man; King Arthur’s bard?)
- Dylan Thomas (The Grand Master)
- Roald Dahl (Oh yes – he was born in Llandaff)
- Diana Wynne Jones (London-born, but has a Welsh family – well, with a name like Jones!)
- Russell T. Davis (Swansea’s famous son)
And my favourite works by each of them:
- The Book of Taliesin
- “Altarwise by owl-light” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales”
- Revolting Rhymes and James and the Giant Peach
- Archer’s Goon and Howl’s Moving Castle
- Torchwood
Dydd Gwyl Dewi hapus!
How many of your favourite five wrote in Welsh? Wrote only in Welsh? Spoke Welsh as their first language?
What about someone like Dr Kate Roberts, famous for numerous books including ‘Tea in the Heather’(that’s the English translation of the title)? She lived in Denbigh and, apart from her writing, she was famous as an educationalist. She was your Grandmother’s Welsh correspondence course tutor and was brave enough, not only to correct your Grandmother’s Welsh, but also to point out a few weaknesses in her English.
