Michelle’s Word

I am a freelance proofreader and editor with a passion for experimenting with writing. Language should belong to all of us and make us feel powerful, not intimidated or constrained.

This blog is a way for me to share what I have learned and what I am learning about writing.
It is also a way for me to tell you about my proofreading and editing service.

I hope you’ll come back regularly to have a look at the writing advice and word games I post. Please let me know if you find them useful, as it would be great to hear from you.

My exuberance for language came from my grandma, who would always take the time to play word games with me as a child. She gave me a wonderful confidence to experiment with words and know that I owned the language I used. This blog is dedicated to her.

It is really sad that many children go through school being afraid of writing and disenchanted by reading because they feel excluded and exposed by it. We need to let them know there is no single right or wrong way to read or write, but many ways that can work for them.

Accuracy is important, but grammar, spelling, and punctuation shouldn’t be imprisoning. They’re the bones and muscles that support the lively and efficient movement of text.

Have fun with words and learn the rules in order to know how to break them!
